Vladamir Putin: America Needs to Pass START Treaty OR ELSE

Russian Prime Minister Vladamir Putin has resorted to threats to help ram START through the lame-duck Congress:

Russia will have to build up its nuclear forces if the United States fails to ratify the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty the two countries signed this year, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin warns in an upcoming CNN interview.

"That's not our choice. We don't want that to happen. But this is not a threat on our part," Putin told CNN's Larry King in an interview to air Wednesday. "We've been simply saying that this is what all of us expects to happen if we don't agree on a joint effort there."

U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the New START in April. The pact would cut each country's deployed nuclear warheads by approximately one-third, limiting each side to a maximum of 1,550 on no more than 700 launchers, and allow both nations to resume on-site inspections.

He said it would take "a very dumb nature" for the United States to ignore its own interests -- but if it does, "then we'll have to react somehow," including the deployment of new nuclear missile technology.

Obama has called ratification of the treaty an immediate priority, saying it's critical to national security and a cornerstone of U.S.-Russia relations. But it must still be approved by two-thirds of the U.S. Senate, where several leading Republicans have called for a vote to be delayed over concerns about missile defense and modernizing the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

But Putin said that without the treaty, Russia will have to arm itself against what the "new threats" posed by U.S. plans for a European-based missile defense system.

This is an all too transparent attempt at using the politics of fear to scare the American people into getting the GOP to cave.

Russia is not going to start lobbing nukes at us any time soon. Waiting until we prevent the tax hikes and pass a budget won't provoke a nuclear war, even if we have to wait until the next session of Congress in a month to begin to tackle the treaty.

It is much more of an immediate concern for our economy and our country to tackle the tax and budget issues first.

Polish, Czech Newspapers: Obama Betrayed Us, Russia Declared Winner: Smart Diplomacy At Its Best

Barack Obama discontinued the plans for a Missile defense shield in eastern Europe. Now, there is a negative backlash against Obama and his decision in the region, especially in Poland and the Czech Republic:

"Betrayal! The U.S. sold us to Russia and stabbed us in the back," the Polish tabloid Fakt declared on its front page.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski said he was concerned that Obama's new strategy leaves Poland in a dangerous "gray zone" between Western Europe and the old Soviet sphere.

Recent events in the region have rattled nerves throughout central and eastern Europe, a region controlled by Moscow during the Cold War, including the war last summer between Russia and Georgia and ongoing efforts by Russia to regain influence in Ukraine. A Russian cutoff of gas to Ukraine last winter left many Europeans without heat.

Poland was the only country that Obama received such negative press:

An editorial in Hospodarske Novine, a respected pro-business Czech newspaper, said: "an ally we rely on has betrayed us, and exchanged us for its own, better relations with Russia, of which we are rightly afraid."

The move has raised fears in the two nations they are being marginalized by Washington even as a resurgent Russia leaves them longing for added American protection.

I see a theme running through these papers. Obama is seen as a traitor by people in the countries of Eastern Europe. I thought Obama was supposed to be the catalyst for change for the better. Wasn't he supposed to heal all wounds of Bush's "cowboy diplomacy"? Wasn't the world supposed to love us again?

"No Radar. Russia won," the largest Czech daily, Mlada Fronta Dnes, declared in a front-page headline.

It seems our allies see Obama as weak. If they think we're weak, imagine what our enemies think of us as a country because he's our leader.

Putin "Resets" US-Russia Relations Back to Cold War

Russia plans to create Arctic military force
Mar 27 07:19 AM US/Eastern

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia is planning to create a dedicated military force to help protect its interests in the disputed Arctic region.

The presidential Security Council has released a document outlining government policy for the Arctic that includes creating a special group of military forces. The report was released this week and reported by Russian media on Friday.

Russia, the United States, Canada and other northern countries are trying to assert jurisdiction over the Arctic.

The dispute has intensified amid growing evidence that the shrinking polar ice is opening up new shipping lanes and allowing natural resources to be tapped.

My Thoughts

Apparently, Putin misinterpreted Obama's desire to "reset" US-Russia relations to mean that we should go back to the US-USSR relations of the Cold War. Or is this more mettle testing?

Considering Kyrgyzstan maybe reneging on their agreement with Russia to kick the US military out of their base for money, this could, also, be retaliation for that.

Obama Administration Has Desperate Need for Gift Czar

Wrong red button
By DAVID S. CLOUD | 3/6/09 1:18 PM EST

GENEVA—After promising to “push the reset button” on relations with Moscow, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton planned to present Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov with a light-hearted gift at their talks here Friday night to symbolize the Obama administration’s desire for a new beginning in the relationship.

It didn’t quite work out as she planned.

She handed him a palm-sized box wrapped with a bow. Lavrov opened it and pulled out the gift—a red plastic button on a black base with a Russian word “peregruzka” printed on top.

“We worked hard to get the right Russian word. Do you think we got it?” Clinton said as reporters, allowed in to observe the first few minutes of the meeting, watched.

“You got it wrong,” Lavrov said, to Clinton’s clear surprise. Instead of "reset," he said the word on the box meant “overcharge.”

Clinton and Lavrov guffawed. “We won’t let you do that to us,” she said.

Despite the shoddy translation work on the U.S. side, Clinton and Lavrov emerged from their meeting a few hours later saying they had accomplished their initial goal—reducing the frostiness in U.S.-Russia relations that had taken hold by the end of the Bush administration.

At a joint press conference afterward Clinton and Lavrov called each other by their first names and said they had conducted wide-ranging discussions on Iran, missile defense, Afghanistan, and nuclear arms reduction. They agreed to intensify preparations for opening a new round of nuclear arms negotiations to replace the one that expires at the end of this year.

They each emphasized that major disagreements and disputes remain on matters such as U.S. support for Georgia, the former Soviet republic invaded by Moscow last year, and on an announced sale by Moscow of advanced air defense missiles to Iran. The improvement in tone was unmistakable compared to the icy encounters that Lavrov used to hold with Clinton’s predecessor.

But in a meeting largely devoid of concrete accomplishments, Clinton’s gift became a source of continuing amusement to everyone except her staff, who realized that flubbing a foreign language hardly made their boss, the nation’s top diplomat, look good.

When a Russian reporter asked her about the mistake, Clinton conceded that Lavrov had “corrected our word choice” and went on to gamely make the best of it. “In a way the word that was on the button turns out also to be true,” she argued Though Lavrov had said that word on the button meant overcharge, Clinton suggested that that peregruzka could also be translated as overload.

“We are resetting so the minister and I have an overload of work,” she said.

But Lavrov refused to let the matter rest there, bringing it up twice more during the press conference in a way that suggested he wasn’t completely unhappy at Clinton’s discomfort.

“We have reached agreement on how reset should sound in both Russian and English,” he announced at one point. “We have no disagreement here.”

A few minutes later, he referred to the gift again, noting that he and Clinton had pressed the button together—a move that summoned up thoughts not of easing tension but of launching a nuclear strike.

“It is a very, very large red button,” he said. “I do hope that Russia and the United States and other countries would never ever push any other buttons associated with initiation of destructive hostilities.”

He told Clinton he would put the button on his desk in Moscow.

My Thoughts

Is it stupidity, carelessness, or apathy that this administration doesn't seem to put any thought at all toward the gifts that they give foreign leaders? Their gift choices have been beyond horrendous.

First he gives PM Gordon Brown 25 DVD's that he has probably numerous times. Then Hillary gives her Russian counterpart a red button that was supposed to say "reset" but instead says "overcharge". I wonder if it was a Freudian moment. Could "overcharge" symbolize the overcharging of America's credit Obama is using to pay for all of his liberal fantasies.

Hillary said they "worked hard" to find the right word. How hard is it to pick up a Russian to English dictionary? What about the many translator websites that they could have used? I know Obama has a Blackberry, and there is a language translator that he can get and use on his phone for free.

For a campaign that was flawless, it's amazing how much the actual governing looks like the complete opposite.
